PUBLISHING
A young handicapped lady called us to ask what
we knew about a "vanity publisher." She had a two-page story reminiscent of Uncle Remus's tales.
A subsidy publisher had offered to publish it for her at the bargain price of 3,000 dollars. We
recommended she not pay 1,500 dollars a page. We put it in the proper format and gave her a list of
likely markets.
We had talked about what we would say when asked, "Should I self-publish?" John Grisham self-published A Time to Kill, which was an excellent novel, but a show of hands, how many people
would have read it if they hadn't seen Tom Cruise in The Firm? The answer is simple. If a
publisher won't pay for it, the reading public might not buy it either. Self-publishing requires the
courage of conviction and money. With our help, some of our clients have self-published.
Typesetting was a part of our business before we became a manuscript service, and we know of a few
printing houses that do a good job without charging a fortune.
