THE PROPER FORMAT
WHY WRITERS USE OUR SERVICES
Our ad is quite specific. For one dollar and ten cents per double-spaced page plus postage, we put
any manuscript in submission ready format. We check spelling, and then, we take a pass at the
grammar. These are things writers usually do for themselves, though sometimes with the help of
their writer's group.
The proper format is not hard to learn. "Writer's Digest" supplies a booklet with all the pertinent
information as well as publishing the same information in their Writer's Market. Manuscript
services like ours, Curious Cat Productions, put manuscripts in submission ready format for a fee
(one dollar and ten cents in our case). I thought, at first, that the price was more than a writer should
pay. A little math on my part convinced me I was wrong. Professional scale for most major
periodicals is about a nickel a word, and the average double-spaced page contains 320 words. This
means a writer fortunate enough to sell to a professional magazine makes about sixteen dollars a
page. In that context, one dollar and ten cents seems a reasonable expense for a writer who wants his
work judged on the basis of content rather than aesthetics.
