Incoming mail outage - The main hard drive on our incoming mail server failed this morning. A backup server was placed into service around 2:30pm, allowing the delayed messages to begin arriving. The backlog should be cleared up early this evening. Web Mail and the Spam Filter configuration form are also now back online. The filtered-mail (spam) folders were on the failed drive; these will be recovered if possible. No messages outside of the spam folders were affected.

Server Move (9/14) - The Datasync mail, web, and ftp/shell servers are being moved from our Biloxi office to the I-55 data center in New Orleans in advance of Hurricane Ivan. Downtime should begin approximately 11 AM today and last 2-3 hours. We regret the short notice and timing, but the possibility of road closings requires quick action. The data center has power backup sufficient to keep the servers running even through extended post-storm power outages.

SpamAssassin is here - We've added SpamAssassin to our spam-blocking arsenal. You will need to turn it on in your mail filter configuration to use it. Note that you may now select Simple or Advanced mail filter configuration. If you are using the mail filters already, select Advanced to control the many other optional filters; the Simple option controls SpamAssassin and the whitelist only.

Mail server replacement - We will be replacing the incoming mail server tonight, between midnight and 3 AM (Monday morning), with a more powerful machine to better handle the load. Web Mail and the filtering/forwarding configuration forms will be unavailable during the transition. Estimated downtime is under one hour.

April 16, 2003

Between 9:54PM and 11:21PM our connection to the Internet was severely disabled. There was a fiber problem with our transport carrier in New Orleans that terminated our main connection between our Gulfport and New Orleans data centers. This caused problems for most of our Mississippi customers.

News move: We will be moving our Biloxi news servers to New Orleans Friday, February 28th beginning around 12AM. Service is expected to be restored by 4AM.

January 29, 2003

Billing system work - We will be moving our customer accounting and billing to a new system Friday night, January 31, beginning around 10 pm. All billing related functions such as service additions/cancels, password changes, and the Account Manager forms will be offline while the data is moved. Most functions should be back online by Saturday morning. This will not affect connectivity, dialup, email, etc.

DSL Promotions - Datasync is currently offering two great promotions for the month of December on all new DSL subscriptions. Internal modem setups have been reduced to $50 and external modem setups have been reduced to $100. Any customers that have been considering switching to DSL but have been reluctant to do so due to price should take advantage of this offer while it lasts.
Promotion ends 12/31/02.

FormMail update - Due to an ever increasing amount of abuse from outside domains, the FormMail script will be updated beginning Friday May 10 to only accept form submissions where the e-mail recipient of the form is destined to either a Datasync e-mail address or a Datasync hosted domain. Any customers using recipients other than these domains will need to update their FormMail pages or they will no longer work correctly.

News server outage: news.datasync.com has been down most of today due to disk problems. It is being worked on at this time.

Update: news is back up, but the article indexes were too trashed to save, after much effort to restore. Old articles have been lost. New articles are arriving.

February 19, 2002

Server moves Friday morning: Shortly after midnight on Friday the 22nd (Thursday night) we will begin moving all Datasync servers to a new office in Biloxi. Datasync e-mail, newsgroups, and locally-hosted web sites will be unavailable while the machines are transported. Dialup sessions which are connected before the work begins should not be interrupted. The work is expected to be complete by 6 AM.

February 16, 2002

Filer disk failure: Due to a critical disk failure in our network filer, all home directories and mail boxes have been lost. We have corrected the filer and are currently restoring the lost data from our Saturday morning backups. We expect to have all operations returned to normal early Sunday morning. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Update: Backup restoration is complete as of 4:15 AM Sunday. Mail, web sites, and ftp are again functional. The backups were made Saturday morning before daybreak. You may notice duplicate email messages if you checked email Saturday morning or afternoon, as the backup will have restored messages which you already retrieved. Likewise, any updates to web sites (Frontpage excepted) made on Saturday will need to be redone.
