Welcome Welcome to the on-line issue of The Magnolia DXer newsletter. It has been another very interesting and active year for our club. We had another successful Field Day event, we logged over 4,000 Qs at Dauphin Island, 4 members were active in CQWW SSB from C6A and Gary, W5FI was very active while on a trip to Macau (XX9). Read about these and many other interesting events and stories in the following pages. Be sure not to miss our two feature articles too. Larry, K4WLS shares a true story of low band DXing that is pure poetry and Ernie tells the tail of our trip to C6A. Top Stories MDXA DXer of the Year The 2001 MDXA DXer of the Year award was presented to Gary Jones W5FI. Gary had a highly successful trip to Macau (XX9) focusing on RTTY, giving many DXers a new one on that mode, as well as SSB and CW. Gary also proved that he is near the top of the MDXA as far a DXCC honors goes by being the last standing in our annual DX countdown at our dinner banquet in December. Gary is the only member to be honored as DXer of the Year more than once. Congratulation to Gary!!! MDXA Member of the Year This year a new award was introduced at our annual Dinner Banquet. One of our new members, Larry, K4WLS suggested that each year, in addition to DXer of the Year, the club should recognize a member who contributes above and beyond the normal to club activities and functions. The recipient of the first ever MDXA Member of the Year award was Randy, W5UE. DX Dinner Banquet This event is always one of the highlights of the year for us and this year was no exception. It was held at the Latimer Community Center, home of the K5MDX Field Day site, and catered by XXXXX. Wes Lamboley, W3WL gave a very interesting presentation on the D68C Comoros DXpedition. Special thanks to Ernie, W5OXA for getting the place and making all the arrangements for the caterer. Check the web page for photos. K5MDX Field Day K5MDX again participated in Field Day this past year. Members of the MDXA, West Jackson County ARC and Keesler ARC once again joined forces for the event. Due to slightly decreased participation, we elected to enter in the 2A catagory and managed to finish 13th in the US/Canada in that catagory. Photos on the MDXA Field Day web page. 2001 Dauphin Island Expedition The MDXA again activated Dauphin Island, AL (NA-213) in February of 2001. Everyone involved had a great time. We aired 3 stations and logged over 4,000 QSOs to over 100 countries on 80-10M SSB and CW. Check the web page for photos and more info at mdxa.org/dauphin-2001.html. We are in the planning stages for another trip in Feb. 2002 with a focus on RTTY and the WARC bands AND HOME COOKED MEALS!!! New Members The MDXA continued to grow at a fast pace the year. New members added were: Good DX to all and hope you will enjoy the best DX club in the world. |
