D2945 Raspberry Jam Acacia Acacia acuminata

A small tree growing to 40 ft. with attractive feathery bluish grey foliage and fragrant orange yellow flowers in foot long spikes. The wood has a strong and very pleasant raspberry scent when cut. The wood was used by aboriginals to make weapons. Good greenhouse/container plant that can be raised inside anywhere or outside in zones 8-10.

D2957 Apple Ring Acacia Acacia albida

A large tree to 60 ft. with blue feathery foliage. Large spikes of creamy yellow flowers. Good for enriching the soil. Prefers sandy soils. Pods readily eaten by game and stock, and leaves eaten by all farm animals except horses. No recorded indications of poisoning. Highly promising as a forage plant in areas with a prolonged dry season. A full-grown tree able to produce well over 100 kg of pods a year. Bark contains 28% tannin. Good greenhouse/container plant that can be raised inside anywhere or outside in zones 8-10.

2180 Earleaf Acacia Acacia auriculiformis

Fast growing small tree to 95 feet and 2 feet thick. Has flat, 8" leaves, short spikes of flowers and much-twisted pods. N. Australia, New Guinea. Excellent for tropical reforestation. It has been known to grow 19 feet in 2 years, and 55 feet in 8 years. Fast growing even in poor clay or sand soils. Builds soils by fixing nitrogen, and can smother Imperata grass. Produces up to 20 cubic meters of firewood or pulpwood per hectare per year. Stands soil ranging from pH 9.0 to 3.0, and rainfall from arid to 8 feet per year. Exudes a clear gum with unusual properties which may become economically valuable. Zone 10 and higher.

2182 Prairie Acacia Acacia angustissima

White 1/2 - 1" puff-like flowers tinged pink or lavender, with yellow stamens, May to July. Shrub to 5 feet with feathery bipinnate leaves. Missouri to Costa Rica. The bark is used for tanning and is added to fermenting drinks. The most northerly and probably the most hardy of our native Acacias.

2935 Indian Gum Arabic Acacia arabica

Acacia arabica is the gum-arabic tree of India, but yields a gum that is considered inferior to the true gum-arabic. The bark of Acacia arabica, under the name of babul or babool, is used in Scinde for tanning. In Ayurvedic medicine, babul is considered a remedy that is helpful for treating premature ejaculation. A fast grower with dark green leaves, covered with blooms in early spring. Good lawn specimen.

Small graceful tree well adapted to growing inside. Has such a profusion of beautiful flowers that they seem to cover the entire plant. Cold hardy to 18 degrees outside. Good greenhouse/container plant that can be raised inside anywhere or outside in zones 8-10.

BM03 Purple Leaf Acacia Acacia baileyana atropurpurea

An excellent new addition to our acacia selections. This is a fast growing evergreen, medium sized tree with silvery blue-gray feathery leaves that are tinged with purple when emerging, only new growth has this purple color. Will grow about feet tall and as wide as the plant is tall, with weeping branches. Nice, sweet fragrant bright golden yellow flowers, in small globose clusters appear in late winter through early spring. Hardy to 15-20 degrees F.

Graceful tree to 30 ft. with 2-4 inch long spikes of flowers. The leaves are said to be edible. Good greenhouse/container plant that can be raised inside anywhere or outside in zones 8-10.

2179 Wadalee Gum Acacia catecu

An attractive tree from India with short hooked spines and yellow flowers., growing to about 20 ft. tall. The leaves and small lower branches eaten by cattle. Heartwood yields important khaki dye.
The wood of Acacia catechu is light to dark red, darkening upon exposure. It is smooth and lustrous, taking a fine polish, with a coarse texture and close, straight grain. It is strong, very hard, heavy and durable. It is difficult to work, due to its hardness and extractive content. It has a high specific gravity of 0.98, with a weight of 61 pounds per cubic foot.
Wadalee is a multipurpose tree, whose wood extractives are used for tanning, dyeing (khaki), treating fishing nets and sails, medicinally (keersal – a pale crystalline deposit) and as a masticatory with pan or betel-leaf (kath). A pale yellow mucilaginous gum exudes from the tree, yielding one of the best substitutes for true gum arabic.
The wood is used for structural work, house-posts, wells, agricultural implements, rice pestles, cane crushers, oil mills, clod crushers, hookah stems, bows, spear handles, tools and tool handles, sword handles, rolling pins, flutes, furniture, boats, firewood and charcoal for goldsmiths and wheel teeth and spokes.

2394 Small Phillipine Acacia Acacia confusa

Shrub to small tree, of thick slightly pendulous foliage. This evergreen tree is prized by many for its brilliant display of bright yellow, mimosoid flowers and its ability to grow in poor, dry soils. It reaches heights of 15 m and shades out most other plants. The leaves are apparently allelopathic since the ground underneath these trees is barren of weeds. Zones 9-11.

BM04 Knife Leaf Acacia Acacia cultriformis

An excellent xeriscape, drought resistant multi-trunk small tree growing to about 15 feet tall and as wide. Has gray-green leaves and fragrant yellow rounded flowers form in clusters in spring. Needs well draining soil, does not tolerate standing water. Plant in full sun to light shade. Somewhat frost resistant. Flowers in spring make for great cut flower arrangements. Cold hardy to 20-25 degrees F.

D2964 Camel Thorn Acacia giraffe

A large umbrella shaped tree with feathery foliage. Seeds have been used as a coffee substitute. From the African Savannah's where it a favorite browse of elephants, giraffe, and elks. Heartwood is so hard that sparks have been known to fly when it is struck with an ax. Good greenhouse/container plant that can be raised inside anywhere or outside in zones 8-10.

2181 Hawaiian Mahogany Acacia koa

The monarch of native Hawaiian forest trees. Height varies from 60' to 100'with a dark green spreading crown of crescent shaped "leaves". Under perfect conditions the hard, straight trunks may be seen growing to 80' with 10' trunks. Greatly valued for it's beautiful red wood with wavy lines.

An upright spreading tree from southeastern Australia. Short trunk, blackish bark and a wide leafy crown of shiny, dark green leaves. A flat topped tree from Ghana. Blue grey pinnate leaves, cream flowers. The name Paperbark Thorn comes from the flaking, peeling bark of the tree. The thin canopy allows a good lawn to be grown under the plant, making it a good yard specimen.

2189 Umbrella Thorn Acacia tortilis

Very fragrant white to pale yellow flowers, on a small tree growing to 25 ft. or more with an umbrella shaped crown. Has spiny branches, seed pods are tightly spiraled. The flower clusters of this tree are most unusual as they hang down from the canopy in large balls. Pick one of these balls and carry it into a room and it will fill the room with a sweet perfume fragrance.
