ADSL Frequently Asked Questions

What is ADSL?

ADSL is an acronym for Asymmetic Digital Subscriber Line. ADSL is a new high speed transmission technology that uses existing copper pairs to transmit data from customer premises to the local telephone switch. ADSL supports two-way transmission of analog voice, a downstream digital channel of up to 1.5 Mbps for data and an upstream digital channel of up to 256 Kbps for data. These rates are very dependant upon the physical and electrical characteristics of the copper pair, usually referred to as the "loop". ADSL service is catagorized as a "best effort" service, meaning, it is not always guaranteed.

How does ADSL work?

ADSL operates at frequencies (20 kHz-1.1 MHz) above normal analog phone service (0-4 kHz) allowing the simaltaneous use of both voice and data services. ADSL will work on a single, non-loaded copper pair within 18,000 wiring feet from a central office.

What are the requirements for DSL service?

  1. Customer premises must be physically located within 18,000 wiring feet of a central office or a remote terminal that has been equipped for DSL service.
  2. Computer (PC,Mac,SUN,SGI) with a Network Interface Card (NIC) installed and working for external DSL equipment.
  3. Customer premise wiring should be of Category 3 or better.
  4. Residential premises must have a Network Interface Device (NID).

I'm outside of the wiring radius for my CO! Will I ever get DSL?

You may still be able to get DSL if you are connected to the CO via a DSL equipped remote terminal. Bell is currently in the process of upgrading many remote terminals for DSL.

Which service should I chose? Single or Multi host?

If you will be using only one computer to connect to the Internet you should select the Single Host service. You can also use the Single Host service if you have a dedicated firewall appliance/computer that is capable of doing Network or Port address translation between your private LAN and the DSL equipment. If you need to connect more than one computer, or an entire LAN to the Internet, or if you plan on using more than one public IP address, you should select the Multi Host service.

I want to purchase my own DSL equipment. What should I buy?

Currently, the following list of equipment is known to work well with BellSouth DSL lines.

  • D-Link Internal ADSL Modem (DSL-100D) !!! Flakey !!!
  • Alcatel Speed Touch Home External Modem (DSL-100D)
  • Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5260 External Modem
  • Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5660 External Router
  • GreatSpeed GS-R250S/Plus External Router
  • GreatSpeed GS-R240S External Modem
  • GreatSpeed GS-P200X/P Internal Modem
Caution should be used when purchasing a "Cable/DSL" router. These types of devices still require the use of an external DSL modem. Other equipment will be listed as we verify that it works correctly.

What is a NID?

A NID (Network Interface Device) is a small grey box usually located on the exterior of a home. This is where the customer premise wiring connects to the telephone company's wiring. Most newer homes (newer than 15 years) will have a NID. If your home does not have a NID, you will need to have the telephone company install one before you will be able to receive DSL. Older residences may have a 150 protector instead of a NID. You will need to call BellSouth and ask to have a NID installed free of charge if you only have a 150 protector.

WARNING! If you already have a NID and call BellSouth to install a new NID, you will be billed for the truck roll. Use the following images to determine if you have a DSL capable NID or a 150 protector.

150 NID

DSL capable NIDs
Siecor 200 NID Siecor 1000 NID Siecor 4000 NID Siecor 7600 NID AT&T 400 NID

What is a NIC?

A NIC (Network Interface Card) is a device that connects a computer to a local area network. NIC's can be purchased from local stores for less than $50. You will need a NIC card in order to connect to our external DSL equipment. Some packages include a free NIC, call or e-mail for availability.

Will I be charged by BellSouth for my DSL service?

No. Datasync will be responsible for all billing and support associated with our DSL customers.

Do I need to purchase any DSL equipment?

No. Datasync will provide and install all DSL equipment on customer premises or in our Biloxi office.

Where can I learn more about DSL?

All the information you ever wanted to know and more about DSL, and it's varients, can be found at DSL Reports.
