Getting Connected to Datasync

[ Windows 95 | Windows NT 4.0 | Windows NT 3.51 ]

NOTE: Some users of Windows have noted that they cannot connect unless they bring up a terminal window and manually login to the access server. If you are having problems connecting, try using a Terminal window to login to see if this corrects the problem. If the problem is corrected, download and install our Dial Up Networking script that removes the need to manually login. More information can be found here.

Windows 95 Dial-up Connection Wizard Configuration

This document assumes you have the original release of Windows 95 and have the Internet Setup Wizard. If you are not using the Connection Wizard please refer to the Dial Up Networking Configuration section.

If your icon or program is named Get On The Internet instead of Internet Setup Wizard, you have Windows 95 Release 2. Please refer to our Get On The Internet instructions since this new wizard is a little different.

Run the Internet Setup Wizard, located in the Internet Tools Folder of the Accessories group. It may be on your desktop.

  • Check the I already have an account with a different service provider box.
  • Click Next
  • You probably want to answer yes to the question about setting up Microsoft Exchange for Internet Mail. This is not a very good mail program and you may want to use something different, but there is no harm in having it set up.
  • Click Next
  • For the name of the provider, enter Datasync.
  • Select an area code and phone number from our Dialup Numbers page based on your location.
  • Do not check the Bring up terminal window after dialing box.
  • Click Next
  • For your login name, your chosen login ID in in all lower case. For example: bob, dave, etc.
  • For your password enter the password assigned by Datasync. Case is important.
  • Click Next
  • Your IP address is automatically assigned by the provider, so be sure that box is checked.
  • Click Next
  • Your primary DNS (Domain Name Service) address is: 205.216.82.1
Your alternate DNS address is: 205.216.82.2
Enter these values in the space provided.
  • Click Next
  • If you will be using Microsoft Exchange for Internet e-mail, check the Use Internet Mail box.
  • For your e-mail address, enter your login ID followed by @datasync.com. For example: bob@datasync.com.
  • For the mail server, enter pop.datasync.com.
  • Click Next
  • Use the default profile settings for Microsoft Exchange.
  • Click Next

When the Wizard finishes its setup it'll ask you to restart your computer. Do this:

When the Windows 95 has restarted, double-click the icon called 'The Internet'. When the 'Connect to' screen comes up:

  • For User Name enter your login ID in all lower case.
  • For Password, enter your Datasync-assigned password. Case is important!
  • Check Save Password to avoid having to repeat this for every connect. (Note: If this is grayed out, you did not install Client for Microsoft Networks as a part of your network setup.)
  • Click Connect. This should cause the modem to dial and connect to Datasync.

You should now be online. You may wish to change your home page to http://www.datasync.com or some other page of your choice.

Windows 95 Release 2 Connection Wizard Configuration

This document assumes you have Windows 95 Release 2 and the Get On The Internet icon or program on your desktop or in the Internet Tools program group. If your icon or program is named Internet Setup Wizard instead of Get On The Internet, you have the Windows 95 original release. Please refer to our Internet Setup Wizard instructions instead.

Step 1:

After you click the Get on the Internet icon in your Internet Tools program group, you will see a dialog box on your screen that will welcome you to the Internet Connection Wizard. All this screen will tell you is a little about what this particular wizard does and what you will be able to do once you have completed running it. You can now press the 'Next' button to continue with the setup process.

Step 2:

You will now see the 'Setup Options' screen. This is where you will need to tell the Internet Connection Wizard what type of configuration you would like to attempt. For this particular configuration we will do a Manual Configuration. So you will now need to select manual on this screen and then click on the 'Next' button.

Step 3:

Welcome to Internet Setup should now be the screen that you see. All this screen tells you is that the wizard is ready to start setting up your computer to connect to the Internet. You can now press 'Next' to continue.

Step 4:

Now you should see the 'How to Connect' screen. This is where you will need to tell the setup wizard how you are going to connect to the Internet. You will have two options here on this screen. You can either tell the setup wizard that you would like to connect using a phone line or either a Local Area Network (LAN). Tell the setup wizard that we are going to be using a phone line to access the Internet. So what we need to do now is click on 'Connect using my phone line' and then click the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 5:

Internet Mail should be the screen that you see on your screen now. This is where you will tell the setup wizard if whether or not you would like to use the program Windows Messaging to send and receive Internet mail. Microsoft recommends that you install this program but it really is not needed since Windows 95 Release 2 comes with another easier to use program to send and receive email called Microsoft Internet Mail. So, we recommend that you click 'No, I don't want to use Windows Messaging'. Click 'Next' to continue.

Step 6:

You should now see a screen named 'Choose Modem'. This is where you will tell the setup wizard what modem you would like to use to connect to the Internet. This field should already be filled out for you unless you have multiple modems installed. If the default modem is not the one that you would like to use to connect to the Internet you should be able to click the small down arrow next to selection field and you should see a list of modems that are currently installed on your system. You will need to now select the modem you would like to use to connect to the Internet and then click the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 7:

Now we are ready to start putting in connection information for Datasync. You should now see a screen called 'Service Provider Information'. Here you will need to type in a name for your Internet connection. Since we are going to be connecting to Datasync, type 'Datasync Internet Services' in the field provided. Once this has been typed in you will need to click the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 8:

You should now see a screen called 'Phone Number'. This is where you will need to enter the phone number of the local POP location that you will be dialing into to access Datasync. Please select the appropriate phone number below that is closest to you and enter it into this field. You do not need to put a check mark in 'Bring up terminal window after dialing' since when you connect there will not be any need to enter any additional information to login. Once you have entered the phone number for the Datasync location that you will be dialing into you can press the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 9:

Now the setup wizard should be displaying a screen called 'User Name and Password'. This is where you will enter in your user information so that you will be able to login to Datasync. After you have entered your appropriate username you will now need to enter the password for the account that Datasync provided for you. Be sure to observe correct case in both the username and password. After these two fields have been filled out you can now press the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 10:

You should now see a screen called 'IP Address'. Since Datasync will automatically assign your IP address to you everytime you connect you can go ahead and click the 'Next' button to continue. If you have obtained a 'Static IP' from us you will need to select 'Always use the following:' and then enter the IP address that Datasync has assigned to you in the field provided and then click the 'Next' button.

Step 11:

Now the setup wizard should display a screen called 'DNS Server Address'. Here you will have two fields that you will need to fill out. In these two fields you should enter the addresses below.

  • DNS Server: 205.216.82.1
  • Alternate DNS Server: 205.216.82.2

Once you have entered the above addresses into their appropriate fields, you can click the 'Next' button to continue.

Step 12:

Congratulations!!! You have successfully completed the configuration for Datasync. Now all that is left to be done is to click the 'Finish' button and Windows 95 will start copying files either from your harddrive or CD depending on how it was setup on your computer. Once Windows 95 is finished copying the files it will ask you to restart your computer for the new changes to go into effect. You will need to click 'Yes' to let your computer restart.

After your computer has booted back up all you need to do to access the Internet is to double click on the Icon on your desktop called 'The Internet'. You will be presented with a window called 'Connect to Datasync, Inc.'. All you should have to do here is enter your password for your account and then click the connect button. Once online, you may wish to change your home page to http://www.datasync.com or some other page of your choice.

This concludes this portion of the Get On The Internet Wizard configuration. Please continue your Internet configuration for setting up Internet Mail and Internet News below. Both are step by step configuration wizards just like the one that you just finished and are real easy to setup. Please Choose one from the menu on the right side of this page.
