Netscape Navigator  Configuration

Choose your version:

[ Netscape Navigator v3.0 | Netscape Personal Edition ]

Navigator v3.0

Netscape Navigator has its own Setup program which does most of the work for you. The site-specific configuration items are all in the Options menu, as follows.

General Preferences

On the Appearance tab, you can set an alternate home page to the default http://home.netscape.com if you wish. You might want to use Datasync's home page, http://www.datasync.com. If you have your own home page with favorite links stored on your computer, you can put the path to it here, either by itself like C:\HOMEPAGE.HTM or using the file URL notation, like file:///C:\HOMEPAGE.HTM. Of course, if you've uploaded a home page to Datasync, that URL works too.

On the Apps tab, you can specify a telnet program, if you have one, for use in navigating telnet URLs.

The Helpers tab is where you can configure in viewers for file types not directly supported by the browser.

Mail and News Preferences

The Servers tab is very important if you want to use Netscape Mail and/or Netscape News. Important settings are:

  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.datasync.com
  • Incoming Mail (POP) Server: pop.datasync.com
  • POP3 User Name: Your login ID in all lower case and no capital P in front. Put just your login ID, not your whole e-mail address. If you put your whole e-mail address here, you will be able to send and receive mail, but replies to mail you send will not get back to you!
  • You want to Remove from the Server mail messages after they're copied to the local disk.
  • Select Check for Mail Never to be able to compose and read mail offline.
  • News (NNTP) Server: news.datasync.com

On the Identity tab, at least be sure Your Email is filled in with your login ID followed by @datasync.com. Again, use all lower case and do not put a capital P in front of the login ID.

On the Organization tab is where you'll find the Remember Mail Password checkbox. This can be very handy.

Network Preferences

The default settings work fine in most cases. The Cache tab allows adjustment of the disk and memory caches, where recently accessed pages are stored for rapid retrieval. Depending on the RAM and hard drive space you have available you may want to adjust these up or down.

The Proxies tab is where you can configure Netscape to use Datasync's proxy server. This is optional but can result in speedier retrieval of frequently-accessed documents. See the Datasync Proxy Configuration document for more information.

The Languages tab allows you to enable or disable Java and Javascript. If you are more concerned about privacy and security than whiz-bang animation and crawling text, you might want to turn these off.

Security Preferences

No modification necessary in most cases. If you get tired of the alerts popping up every time you submit a form or access a secure site, you may turn them off here on the General tab.

Netscape Personal Edition

Note: These instructions were written for Netscape Personal Edition (16 bit) version 1.2; later versions may vary. If you are using Netscape on a Win95 machine you need to configure the win95 dialup networking. Netscape for win95 does not include a dialler.

The first thing Registration Wizard will ask is whether you want to create a new Internet account or use an existing account. Select Use Existing Account.

Select Account Setup. Press Next.

Enter your Full Name and Organization however you like. Press Next.

Enter your Login Name in lower case. For the Password, enter your assigned password exactly as you have it, making sure to observe case. Press Next.

Enter the area code and phone number to connect to, which is:

  • (228) 382-1300 if you live in Biloxi, D'Iberville, or Jackson County
  • (228) 364-1300 if you live in Gulfport, western Harrison or Hancock County
  • (334) 476-8154 if you live in Mobile or Baldwin County

A more up to date list of phone numbers can be found in our about section's Dial-up Numbers Quick Reference.

Press Next.

Next you'll enter you e-mail login name and password. For the login name, enter your login ID without a capital P in front. Registration Wizard will assume you want the leading P there, but you don't. Remove it.
The password for e-mail is the same as your dialup password. Press Next.

For the Primary DNS Server, enter 205.216.82.1
For the Secondary DNS Server, enter 205.216.82.2
Press Next.

For the POP Server, enter pop.datasync.com
For the SMTP Server, enter smtp.datasync.com
For the NNTP Server, enter news.datasync.com
Press Next.

You do not need to bring up a TTY window when connected. Press Finish.

The other two Registration Wizard steps, Modem Setup and Dialing Setup, do not involve any Datasync-specific information.
