Ship Island took quite a toll on the Thirteenth. 37 men of the 13th died on Ship Island. Lufkin, in his history of the 13th, lists 159 men dying of disease during the regiment's 36-month service. Most of regiment spent only four months on the Island with Cos. D & F remaining an additional seven months. Since there were no combat casualties on the Island, the Ship Island deaths must be attributed to other causes, most probably disease. Therefore a disproportionate number of deaths due to disease occurred on the Island. Lufkin, in Chapter III of his history, provides considerable details on the miserable conditions on the island. Most of the deaths occurred in June and July just as the summer heat and humidity set in and just before the bulk of the regiment left the island.
