The first Moosehead retained her former name; the second was named for the first.

A passenger ferryboat, Moosehead was built at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, in 1911 and purchased from the
Maine Central Railroad 28 March 1918 for use as a patrol boat during World War I. Operating from the Washington
Navy Yard in 1919, Moosehead was redesignated YFB-2047 in 1920 and Porpoise in 1921. Continuing
to operate along the Atlantic coast in peacetime, she was sold 24 February 1931.
