SOUTH MISSISSIPPI SPORTBIKE RIDERS
GANG WEBPAGE

Last Update: April 18, 2002

South Mississippi Sportbike Riders

Whas Up?

Welcome to the webpage! On this site you'll read a bit about what's up in south Mississippi with the sportbiking scene of a certain group of riders (hmmm...a gang?). As one might suspect, sportbiking is alive and well in south Mississippi - hell, we have the beach and the sun, so why not a pack of hooligans, too? On this page you can check out a bit of what's going on with us.

How The Hell Did This Gang Get Started?

We simply met up one way or another (pretty basic, huh?). Although there are lotsa sportbikes in south Mississippi, this site's focus is on a special group of riders who definitely love to ride. The internet has really helped us "hook up" with each other and it's through the Net that we all keep in touch and plan rides. What has resulted is a group of 15+ riders who constantly keep in touch and who constantly ride - even during the winter. It's not a secret club or such...everyone is friendly and we welcome others to hang with us as long as things can be kept somewhat organized and safe (helps keep the crash-factor low).

So What Do We Do?

Just about every weekend we ride (ok, so maybe I don't). But every weekend, someone in the group is - even during the winter (did I say that already?). We usually yap every night on our club page on Yahoo called Mississippi Motorcycle Riders or at our "exclusive site" called Shimming Stud Quilters and now we announce that Rick has created a club page as well at: Gulf Coast Sportbike. In the chatrooms or by "instant messaging", we talk about recent rides, recent crashes, future rides and future crashes. On Tuesday at 7 pm, there is a "bike night" at one of a couple of resturants on the Coast...lately it's been at Jim Bob's Pool Hall on Teagarten Rd in Gulfport...
email David G.
to find out where the next one is. On Saturday and Sunday, however...hehehe. WE RIDE. Sometimes the group is only a couple of bikes but sometimes everybody shows up.

So What's It Like To Ride With Us?

Answer: Lots of crashes (just kidding). Usually we meet at 9 am (it's been 10 am lately) on Saturdays at the Chevron Station at I-10/I-110 in Biloxi and on Sundays we meet at the Triumph Shop on Lorraine Rd. in Gulfport. Then we decide where the ride will lead to (if it wasn't previously decided). We take off in staggered formation and go for the 2-lane highways. Some of our favorite rides are simply highways north of the Coast which lead to Lucedale, Wiggins and Hattiesburg. We take to the rural scene and the exhilaration of riding with a bunch of "like-minded" hooligans can put a smile on your face for days thereafter. It also seems to put looks of concern on the locals we meet while in these rural areas...especially when we stop en masse at some "mom & pop" woodframed store to relax for a moment. The locals aren't sure if we are space aliens or terrorists (we're BOTH!).
We usually burn up most of the day on the ride, stopping when needed for refreshments and gas and to yak for a bit. Often during the ride, different sub-groups form as the speeds get faster...in other words, not everybody stays up with the pace-setter(s) and that is how it should be because not everyone rides the same. Speaking of pace, even though we continually stress "ownership" for your abilities and limitations, crashes do sometimes occur. When the occassional triple-digit speed is attained utmost concentration is required to stay safe. Crashes and near-misses are definitely wake-up calls that need to be heeded. Of course, generally we ride without incident and if the ride is exceptional, we'll talk about it for days afterwards! (we talk about crashes for days afterwards, too). Lately, a lot of the road trips have been up to Morgantown, MS where these famous "red bluff" gullies exist. This run, which I call "The Red Bluff TT" is about a 320 mile roundtrip.

So What Have We Been Up To, Lately?

For events prior to date below, click on Calendar of Past Events page.

July 1: Curt, Michelle, Brad & Kelvin made a dash to the Bluffs. Jim, Drake, Jeff and others(?) went up around Wiggins later that day.

July 8: Rick came back from CA for the weekend...it was great to see him again...and great to ride together...Rick, Curt, Michelle, Jim, Eagle & David G. made a run to Waynesboro and had a blast on the Neely/Avera Rd. Upper Hwy 63 was super fine, too! Nice riding with ya, Rick! David's 11 yr old son Stephen also came and is now a member of the "Triple Digit Club". Ralph made it up to Bendale but decided to turn back due to the heat (man, it was a hot day!).

July 14: Michelle, Jeff, Paul & Tam with Kurt, Todd & James from Mobile and a few others teamed up for a ride to Pensacola. We hear some of 'em didn't make it back till 2 am!!!

July 15: David G. and Jason R. took to the northerly twisties to celebrate Jason's bike finally getting fixed. Tried to find others to ride with to no avail...made a burnout video (see video's below).

July 21: Jeff, Eric, Chris (& girlfriend) did a WET RIDE up to Poplarville ("Silver Run")...even though it rained on them pretty good on their way back, they had a fun ride.

July 22: Michelle, Curt, Kelvin & Brad w/ Lance who brought his bunch of young hooligans from Louisiana (and all their tires were STILL BALD!!!) met up with Mark and Suzanne and they all "did" Red Bluff and had a great ride. At the "table top" of Red Bluff, a sportbike "trickfest" occurred that even had the locals dropping their jaws.

July 28: Jerrie, Tam, Paul, Josh, Chris and John headed over to Pensacola and spent the night partying!!!

July 29: Ralph, Jim W., Eric and Dick took off and rode up through backroads to Hwy67, then through Whiteplains, Perkinston, Silver Run, Poplarville where according to Eric: "...we were escorted out of town by a MHP - luckily we saw him...of course since we all felt guilty of our previous sins just moments before, (so) we stuck with him behind until he couldn't stand it anymore, and away he went."

Aug 18: David, Curt and Eric did a "Wiggins Run" via Big Level...the MHP guy on Big Level Rd. was in his yard in full uniform and stared us down pretty good when we passed...but thankfully we had already pulled back on the speed before we came around his curve. Foiled 'em again!!! David couldn't resist a forcing a loud backfire to watch the cows stampede...and stampede they did!

Aug 19: Eric & Ralph met up at Waffle House and did the Silver Run and had a blast (darn, Eric's putting in the saddle-time this weekend!).

Aug 25: Ton of folks rode over to Pensacola for a party and overnight stay. Details pending.

Sept 1: Ride up to Neely-Avera Rd for some cool twisties. Five bikes started out, but only 3 of us made it all the way: Jim & his son Jason (borrowing Jerries Katana), David G. and Jeff. Got a little wet on the way home. Question of the ride: Where in Sandhill IS Sandhill?

Sept 1: Party at David's house. WOOO-WOOO...moonshine, tequila and lime...lotsa "war stories" and Michelle doing Karaoke. Buncha people showed and we partied till 3 am!

Sept 15:Jim (on Jerrie's Katana), Jeff, Curt & David D. (Hyabusa-man!) tore the roads "up north" all day. They had a great ride.

Sept 16:Curt, David G., Brad & his girlfriend Brie, Travis and Eagle tore up the roads from Wiggins to Wade. Took some "Las Vegas X-tremes" style pics and video out on the Wade-Vancleave Rd. Triple Digits ruled this day! Mark and Suzanne did Red Bluff.

Sept 22:Party at Michelle's was a lotta fun. We cooked, ate and then had towel wars and ended up throwing everyone into the pool. WEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Sept 23:Two rides: Curt, Travis and Brad did Red Bluff. Rick, Jim (+ his boy Jason), Harry, David G., David D., Jeff, Chris & Kyle went to Sandhill to go through the Neely-Avera Rd. On the way back down, David G. went down in a 90 degree left hand curve just north of Neely and also Harry crashed badly further behind on the Fazer. Harry is in the hospital, the Fazer is wrecked badly and David G. limped his bike home full of mud sans both mirrors. Very minor damage for David but our hopes are the Harry is not too badly hurt (info on his condition up at the hospital in Leaksville is not current). (for the story of David, see Crash Hall of Fame)

Sept 27:Ralph, Jeff, Jim and a few others run up to Hattiesburg to visit Harry in the hospital and to check out Bike Night there.

Sept 28:Red Bluff run. Rick, Jim, Jeff, Curt and Michelle do the run with no problems. Stopped at Mark and Suzannes on the way up.

Sept 29:David G (w/ son Stephen), Eagle, Drake (Ron), Curt, Kelvin and Brad do Big Level and on up to Wiggins. Lotsa wheelie action. Good ride in some excellent weather! Ralph and Eric make a run up to the Neely-Avera Rd. to see what all the fuss is about.

Oct 7:Rick, Eric, Curt & Michelle rode counter-clock wise to Vancleave, up to the back side of Camp Shelby on hwy 29 and over to Purvis. Then down the Purvis/Baxter Rd to Hwy 43 to Poplarville then down 53 and then Hwy 15 to their starting point: the Chevron at i-10/I-110. All total of 269 miles. Rick let Michelle ride his ZX9!

Oct 14:Rick, Eric, Jim, Jeff, Kyle, a friend of his on an R1 and a couple on a Honda Superhawk did all the roads up between here and Hattiesburg. Day turned out great and much asphalt was burned up by these guys!

Oct 20:Rick, Michelle, Curt, Tarzan and Danny hit the roads through Purvis, Monticello and back down thru Red Bluff and had a blast.

Oct 21:Rick, Michelle, Curt and Danny do Neely-Avera and surrounding areas. Crayfish pie eh? COOL!!! Eric Luber wondered why no one called him!!! (he Eric, Jim's on the sidelines, remember???)

Oct 27:Rick, Eric L. and Dan rode all over south Mississippi. Click here to read the details per Rick's post at his Yahoo Site.

Oct 28:David G., James Sansing and Todd (YES! THREE ZRX1100's!!!) did the "Agricola Run" up to the infamous Neely-Avera Rd and had a blast. Crossed the old trestle bridge (bridge is closed!) and had to do some "dirt tracking" to get around the implaced obstacles to prevent cars from using the old bridge. Ran up to Sandhill and had catfish and then revisited Dave and Harry's crash scenes. It was a bit chilly...but it was a great ride! See pics below of this ride.

Nov. 4:Jim finally got his ZRX going with new motor and it's badder than ever. Big ride by a shitload of riders up to Red Bluff...the usual gang.

Nov. 10:Rick, Jim, Dan, Drake and a new guy on a GSXR 600 rode through Benndale, Wiggins, etc. (about 200 miles). Click here to read the details per Rick's post at his Yahoo Site.

Nov. 11:David G., Jim, Curt, Travis and Lance all met up at the dragstrip in Hattiesburg to check out the motorcycle show. Cool sights and sounds! Sportbikes EVERYWHERE. It was dark when they finally made it home!!!

Nov. 12:Rick & Co. did a ride on Veteran's Day! Click here to read the details per Rick's post at his Yahoo Site.

Nov. 17:Red Bluff Run! Click here to read the details per Rick's post at his Yahoo Site.

Nov. 18:We all met at the Chevron at I-10/I-110. Rick plus a girl he had invited, Jim & son (Jason), David G. & wife, Bart & wife, (lotsa "pillions" today!!!), Kyle, Mike, Eagle, Dick & Eric. We did Old River Rd up to Benndale. Lotsa riders split off at that point. VERY RELAXED RIDE.

Nov. 25:Red Bluff Run! Click here to read the details per Rick's post at his Yahoo Site.

Dec 16:Neely-Avera Run...first, Dave, Curt & Michelle hooked up and raced over to Wade, MS to meet up with Todd. We do the Agricola Run up to McClain and hooked up with us there Jim meets us at the old trestle bridge and it's a free-for-all up Neely-Avera Rd and we arrived at the catfish resturant on Hwy 63. Back down 57 to 26 then Mt. Zion Rd to 15 and finally home. A great day and a great ride! Also, Rick, Eric and Ralph did a ride up through Wiggins.

Jan 12:Party at David G's for Pat Coleman and Ralph Frum (Pat was visiting and Ralph is leaving). EVERYBODY showed up except for Paul, Tam, Curt, Michelle and the "Mobile Bunch". A fine time was had by all and we had our bonfire in the grill!

Jan 13:Ride to Red Bluff with Pat as honored guest on Jerrie's "Tuna" and Ralph running his farewell ride. Great ride except that Jason W. went down at the exact spot Dick went down last year. Also, Dan went down in a curve. Both riders are ok. Thanks go to Mark & Suzanne for their free towing service!!! It was dark when everyone made it back to the Coast. See Pat's letter to all of us (on Rick's site) by clicking here.

Jan 20:Rick, Jim, Curt, Michelle, David G., Dan, Jason, Bart and a few others made the run to Paul B. Johnson's State Park and hung out with the Gold Wingers during their annual chilli cook-off there. It started out cold but it soon warmed up and the sun shone for us most of the day.

Jan 26:Rick, Eric, Jeff & Scott did a ride up to Bendale. Click here to read the details per Eric's post on Rick's Yahoo Site.

Jan 27:Jim (w/ son Jason), David G., Curt, Michelle, Eagle and Brad (new guy) tore up the roads doing the Neely-Avera Run to "that catfish place" up at Sandhill, MS. 170 mile ride...lotsa fun...Jim wheelied with Jason on the back...also Jim's modified ZRX with passenge STILL beats David's stock ZRX in roll-ons.
