Ocean Springs' Thomas Quinn with a nice
black drum he recently caught fishing with
his uncle Jeff and dad Tim in Graveline
Bayou. Even with a stout rod and heavy line,
it took a full 25 minutes to land the big
drum.
The group also scored well with the speckled
trout, hauling in quite a few fish on
1/4-ounce chartreuse D.O.A.s. As you know,
the D.O.A. is a realistic shrimp imitation,
and it oftentimes performs as well as the
real thing. The D.O.A.s come in several
weights, and while the lighter weight bait
may be more difficult to cast on a windy
day, it usually results in a more
realistic presentation and more fish in the
boat...

SPEC Update
By
Dr. Fred Deegen
Latest Trout Release

Just last week researchers at the SPEC (Sea trout
Population Enhancement Cooperative) released another batch of trout
fingerlings into the waters of Davis and Old Fort Bayous.
Yesterday, the group collected fish from the waters
of Hancock County where the next series of releases is planned.
Anglers with the Coast Conservation Association assisted with the capture of
these fish.
Once landed, the fish were transported to their new
home in the quarantine raceways at Cedar Point. They will remain there
until researchers are certain that they have no parasites or diseases.
Then they will be transported to enclosed temperature-controlled and
photoperiod-controlled spawning tanks where they will be induced to spawn.
The resulting fry should be sufficiently large to be
tagged with coded wire tags and released back into the waters of Hancock
County by mid-summer...
It is hoped that this ongoing effort will eventually
result in improved fishing for the Coast's most popular fish species.
SPEC - the Sea trout Population
Enhancement Cooperative is a joint effort between the Mississippi Department
of Marine Resources and the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast
Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs.
