Our story: Omaine cattery was established in 1999 when I began to realize our 12 year old household pet, Maggie, was getting "old". No she wasn't ill, just getting "crotchety" at all of us.
I began to talk to my husband about possibly getting another cat now, so I wouldn't be "replacing" her. I also thought I might want to breed and show cats.
Maggie's semi-longhair and some aspects of her personality reminded us of a Maine Coon cat, so I began researching what was available locally. Through a series of contacts and visiting a cat show 3 hours away, I watched, talked to breeders asking "How did you get started?"
There, I got much advice to think about -- very good advice, I might add. It seemed that all the breeders recommended getting an alter and showing it before even thinking about breeding. At that show, I watched Betty White judging an absolutely wonderful class of Maine Coons. They still stand out in my mind as "WOW!"
The long and short of it is this: in the summer of 1999, I was blessed with an altered boy: Thanks to Ginny Molloy, Charmalot Cattery, I obtained a very sweet red classic male kitten who was born on Good Friday. So I named him Charmalot Seder of Omaine.
I obtained another alter -- a retired show stud named Furkats Charles Thomas of Omaine
turned out to be the most wonderful companion for a kitten, patient, protective
and playful.
