The cutting and polishing of the table does not require the setting of a precise angle. The table is cut to touch the points of the main facets. If everything were perfect this would occur when the angle was set to 90 degrees and the index was 64. Unfortunately things are not perfect and the angle must be adjusted to match the table to the main facets. Each time the lap is changed to a finer lap or polishing lap, the trial error match be repeated. The use of the down light in cutting the table is described in the following steps:
a. Start cutting the Table.
- If light does not come on, turn screw until it contacts the second plate and bulb lights.
- If light comes on, back off screw until bulb goes out and then follow step 1.
The polishing of facets requires that the faceter have the capability of adjusting the stone up and down and tilting right and left. In other words the stone is floating with out any fixed depth. Usually the polishing angle is ½ degree less than the cutting angle. To approximate the cutting angle, about 25 clicks must be added to the depth after the stone has been lowered to the polishing lap. Continuing adjustment is required, until the polished surface matches the cut surface. This is not a major problem with symmetrical stones as the adjustment is only required for the initial facet
