Happy Mardi Gras!! Kelly has spent the day in New Orleans with friends, and I'm sure she'll have plenty to tell tomorrow but I'm going to give a brief update from last night's Lundi Gras celebration in New Orleans and share some of the photos I took.

I've wanted to see the 9th Ward Marching Band (assorted characters who frequented the Spellcaster Lodge and include Mr. Quintron and Ms. Pussycat) perform in a parade for awhile since I knew of their existence, but it never seemed to work out. This year was different because they were invited to march in the Proteus parade. I made up my mind last weekend that we were going to take off work, go over early, and watch the Proteus and Orpheus parades and see the marching band. I met Kelly at the rest area near her worksite and we drove over and found parking between Magazine and St. Charles near the parade route start on Napoleon. We parked the car and walked along Magazine towards the Starbucks past Whole Foods. When we arrived, we found it closed, so we walked back to our starting point. Kelly picked up a Tazo tea drink at Whole Foods, I got an iced mocha at a new internet cafe, and we picked up some rolls at a French bakery. We made our way back to St. Charles around 4.30pm and waited for about an hour for the Proteus parade to start rolling by. The main thing I enjoy about the parades are the marching bands and the impressive floats which are colorful and artistic. I don't really care for the crowds of greedy, pushy, obnoxious, drunk people who fight over some cheap plastic beads (why do I go, right?), but I take it in stride as part of the event. The big debate this year is whether the event should have happened or not, considering the storms that passed through six months ago. I have mixed feelings. I agree to a point with some that it's too soon and it causes a bigger burden on cities with the trash in already reduced garbage services and it makes it look like things are 'normal' (something that will never happen, or at least for decades) with people partying and having a good time. On the other hand, it is a big distraction from all the destruction and misery, yet at the same time a reminder with smaller crowds, parades, and the floats themselves paying tribute or satire to the whole experience. I hope that those from outside the area take home with them a real first-hand view of what people are still going through all along the coast. Blah, blah, blah...I sound like all the other media snippets that I dislike and residents who are still playing the fiddle of 'My Heart Bleeds for You'. Here are some of the photos of the parade instead:

The 9th Ward marching band were great! Totally made the whole night for me. I had a t-shirt for the band on and I think some of them were happy to see a 'marching band groupie'. Other people in the crowd were wondering what the hell Quintron was in this cone-shaped, motorized music machine (like the photo, it was a red cone shape that his whole body was hidden beneath and only his head stuck out the top and the large speaker was emitting strange humming sounds that those unfamilar with Quintron would be dumbstruck by) and who was this unknown band. Kelly said someone next to her said, 'The white 9th Ward Marching Band?' Clueless fools. The rest of the parade was fun to watch, although the lack of the usual number of local marching bands was present, but it was great to see a band all the way from Chicago participating. The whole Proteus parade wound down after an hour around 6.30pm, then we waited for the Orpheus parade to roll by. It wasn't too much longer before their super krewe passed through with an assortment of celebrities. Their grand marshall this year was Steven Seagal, who I do have a photo of. His is a large man, and his presence was made even bigger on the huge float. There was also a float that had Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansen, but we were on the side with Josh Hartnett, who Kelly pointed out and didn't recognize at first because he had longer hair. Apparently Scarlett Johansen was on the opposite side of the float. Damn, I was sure disappointed and I was tempted to run to the other side to catch at least a glimpse of her if not a photo (yeah, I like Scarlett Johansen), but the floats were going a little bit too fast and there were a lot more people for this parade than Proteus. After a bit though, the parade came to a halt. It seemed to be held up somewhere ahead on the route, so we decided that it was time to get something to eat at Mona's Cafe, then hope that by the time we were done with dinner the parade would be over and Napoleon would be open at the Magazine intersection. Our plan worked as we thought because when we were eating we saw people coming down Magazine from Napoleon draped in beads. The unfortunate thing is that dinner was not great. Kelly got the chicken schwarma which she did not like. Other items were okay, but we both agreed it had gone downhill. We chalked it up to possibly losing cooks and hiring a new one. Who knows? We did stop by Baskin Robbins on the way home for ice cream. It's been awhile since we've been there. Overall, it was a fun evening. The weather was a bit crisp, but nice. Don't know if we'll go again to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for awhile (it's been a few years since we've gone over), but at least we were able to experience the first event post-Katrina.

Devo - "Gut Feeling" - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou soundtrack (Hollywood)

It's been a nice weekend...hard to believe tomorrow is Monday. It should be an easy week though - as I am planning to take off some time for Mardi Gras. But that will be a story for the next entry.

So Friday Allison & I spent the evening hanging out with our friend, Becca, who was recovering from having her tonsils removed the week before. We just chilled out at her new place...a temporary Post-Katrina  residence until she finds something of her own. We had a nice time chatting and watched a French movie called He Loves Me He Loves Me Not. The movie starred Audrey Tatou (Amelie) as a love-crazed woman. At first I thought "this movie sucks, this woman just needs to be smacked upside the head!" But then the movie took a quick turn and it suddenly became really interesting. Definitely worth the price of a rental! Speaking of Audrey Tatou...she reminded me & Becca of a former 3rd Mate we called Frenchie. He was neighbors with Audrey Tatou - even said she drove him to the airport. So now, any time I see one of her movies (like the soon-to-be released DaVinci Code) I think of our 3rd Mate while we were sailing around Korea. It was summer time & I would sunbathe on the "steel beach" before my shift every few days. One day Frenchie was out there is a speedo...I had to position myself so as not to have full view. He wasn't really fat or anything, but he wasn't all that either. Anyway...I mentioned to someone about the speedo and that someone mentioned it to Frenchie. And his response was "You Americans are so prude. I am French, it is my right to sunbathe in my speedo." (say that with a thick French accent and you'll get the picture)  Ok...that was a serious digression...

Saturday Chris and I slept in pretty late. It was rainy when we got up & for most of the day. We watched the bronze medal hockey game between Russia & Czech Republic - go Czech! Then we ran out to Gulfport to check out flooring & buy some calk - the ceiling guys never came back to finish calking the molding - now there's a surprise (lots of sarcasm). We went to GCO first and they did not have a large supply of wood flooring planks. Plus we found out that the guy who did the tile in our kitchen & gave us the flooring estimate for the living room is no longer down on the coast. Bummer. We found pretty much what we were looking for at Lowe's, but may end up getting it somewhere else where it's cheaper. So now we have to line up someone else to do the floor...oh please don't let it be as big an ordeal as the celing was! After Lowe's we met up with Pete, Anne & Neil for dinner at Lookout 49. I had a black & bleu filet that was really good. I was pretty full by the end of dinner...but ready to play poker for the next ?? hours. It was the usual group plus a couple of others. Chris was the first one out - in near record time (I guess he & Pete split that dubious honor). I managed to stick around for awhile...never amounting any massive chip stack, but making some progress. I ended up just in the money - 3rd place. I played mostly by instnct - a few times not using instinct & regretting it. But for the most part it worked out. Next time, it's first place baby! (Girl can dream, right?) Thus the song for today is in honor(?) of my poker playing last night. (the question mark is because, though I got my money back plus some - I could've & should've played better. There's always next time...)

Today Chris got up early and went to Mobile for mountain biking with some other guys. I have been hanging around the house for the most part...doing some cleaning & cooking. I did catch the tail end of the gold medal game - Sweden beat Finland 3-2. I went out a couple of times - once for shrimp (luckily a Vietnamese woman was selling shrimp out of the back of her truck in Diamondhead - so I didn't have to go down to Bay St. Louis as planend) and once for grocery items Chris couldn't find in Mobile. I'm planning to make gumbo...though I might change my mind and make jambalaya instead. It's essentially the same ingredients either way. Alan had some jambalaya last night for poker - and it was pretty good. So we shall see... Chris is less than excited that I couldn't find turkey/chicken andouille sausage.

Tomorrow is Lundi Gras! Chris & I are cutting out of work early to go to the parades in New Orleans. Should be entertaining. We'll write more after that & have pictures. Until then...Happy Mardi Gras! Le bon ton roulez!

Beastie Boys - "Hey Fuck You" - To The 5 Boroughs (Capitol)

Well, our repair work is done...almost. The crew came out on Monday afternoon, including the owner of the local company, Valentino Salazar himself, to finish the job. Guess he got the message last week that no-one was getting paid until the full job was completed as per the contract. The crew he sub-contracted to do the ceiling work came out again and used our extra chartreuse paint to cover up the blemishes on the walls. They also installed the living room ceiling fan/light fixture and the front porch light as well as the work on the eaves outside. Valentino originally had told them to just caulk the gaps on the corners and edges of the ceiling, but that wasn't going to fly with us. A mutual agreement was reached for them to install crown moulding, which hides the less than perfect edges and also was something we had been considering anyway as a home improvement. Everything turned out pretty well and I only say it's done almost because the hired crew was supposed to come out yesterday evening to finish caulking the gap between the ceiling and the top of the moulding, but they never showed up. They probably won't either, but it saves us $75 for something we can do ourselves for much cheaper. We've learned our lesson to be a little more cautious in selecting a contractor, or at least doing a bit of research before we make a selection because had we found this article in the local paper sooner, we would have looked elsewhere (look at the third paragraph down). Today's song goes out to Valentino and all the other crooked motherfuckers (contractors, insurance companies, government, etc.) down here on the coast acting shady and ripping people off.

On a lighter note, at least our insurance did cover the work we had done and we have a little leftover which we're going to use towards replacing the carpet in the living room which was kind of mucked up when the ceiling was replaced. We had planned to do this anyway, but it'll just get done sooner now. We're planning to go shopping this Saturday and see if we can find any local retailers that have any reddish bamboo. Yay! We're also having some topsoil laid on our poor lawn and getting it re-seeded with new grass (oh joy, as if mowing the lawn wasn't enough fun already) as well as having a 4' x 8' area rototilled where our old herb garden was so we can grow some new herbs. Surprisingly, in the spot where we had our herbs (which was beneath a tree that fell and we had the stump hauled away) we found this the other day:

parsley

I think today's song also applies to some of my co-workers. I have never seen such a sorry collection of lazy, disrespectful, whiny, pathetic crybabies. One of the other assistant supervisors and I were discussing today how we have to write (type) out everything in specific detail because the workers act like such preschool children we'll just have to treat them as such. I did have a chance to 'jump ship' a few weeks back with a job opening with the Transportation Security Administration as a Security Screener at the Gulfport/Biloxi Airport, but I turned the position down. It would have been too significant of a cut in pay with not much opportunity for advancement (not like my current position has much more). The downsides of drawing out what I currently have built up in my state retirement fund along with other factors made it too much of a financially unsound choice at this point. Who knows if I would have enjoyed the job anyway? Change is good, and it's probably about time for a career change (something that's not necessarily in the social services field, although that's about all I really qualify for with my experience), but I think something else will come along that's more appealing all around. I still may look into culinary school and baking once we've finished paying off our debt and are able to move elsewhere. Maybe I'll practice this weekend and bake some bread or work on creating a sourdough starter since we're kind of back to 'normal' in our house.

Harry Connick Jr. - "Here Comes the Big Parade" - She (Sony)

It's been an annoying week of dealing with contractors. Will they show up? When they do show up will they do quality work? Will they finish the job? The answer to all of these questions is a mixed bag. Late Monday some guys finally showed up to drop off sheetrock. Tuesday Chris took the day off to wait for them. They showed up a little after 9am, tore down the ceiling & hung the sheetrock. They were supposed to show up bright and early Wednesday to finish the job. So I took off Wednesday & waited around forever...kept getting phone calls saying they were on their way, etc... No one came until after 6pm - just to drop off supplies. Thursday & Friday Chris stayed home...the workers painted the bedroom ceiling & finished most of the ceiling in the living room & garage. They still have to do the facia outside and hook up our ceiling fan. We can't fault the workers...well in some instances we can, but for the most part the problem has been with the local contractor. The workers (who are from places like Illinois & Indiana) have been getting yanked around by the local guy - lack of supplies, not getting paid, miscommunication. They were told that we would pay them directly...we were never told that. Besides we're not paying one more cent (already paid half at the onset) until the work in finished. And the quality of work is not all that great. The ceiling in the living room is far from perfect. And it's a good thing we didn't have new floors in place, because they'd be ruined after the mess that they've made. It's also a good thing that we already planned to get new flooring in the living room & paint the bedroom walls - because both are definitely necessary after this week. Now add to the list getting crown molding - like I said, the ceiling in the LR is not great...especially around the edges. Hopefully molding will make it look better. Plus I need to re-paint in there, because they got the mud & paint everywhere. Oh well...please let this mess be over with soon!

Chris was going pretty stir crazy after staying in the house all day TH/FR. As soon as I got home he was antsy to leave. We stuck around and watched Daily Show (they did an excellent job of covering the VP's shooting incident this week, as expected). Speaking of the shooting...on my way to work there's always a stretch of road with safety messages. They recently changed them to hunting safety messages - one says "Keep out of the Line of Fire" another says "Don't Overload". I think they ought to change one to say "Don't be a Dick". But I digress...then we grabbed some coffee and headed to Home Depot. We needed a new filter for the shop vac to continue cleaning the living room mess. We met some friends from work at a new Japanese restaurant in Ocean Springs called Saki. Can you believe Ocean Springs now has 3 Japanese restaurants? The only other one on the coast is Yuki's in Biloxi. Crazy! Anyway...we were seated promptly, as most people were waiting to be seated at the hibachi tables. Service wasn't great - but they are less than 2 weeks old & still getting the feel for things. Food was ok...but not great. Plus I ended up w/ a stomach ache later. I don't think we'll be going back there anytime soon. Thank goodness Sake Cafe is open in New Orleans...now if only Rock-n-Sake would re-open too. Anyway...after dinner we split off - Chris went to visit Gary, I headed to the Imperial Palace w/ Bobbie & Jay to see Final Destination 3. The IP was a mob-scene & seriously smokey. The theater was relatively empty, which just added to the creepiness of the film. It was a good sequel, gruesome as usual, but also suspenseful...especially the beginning scenes at the carnival. Don't think I'll be riding any roller coasters for awhile.

Saturday we got up by 9 and got ready to head to New Orleans. We had planned going to the city to go shopping (Whole Foods on Magazine is open again!), to a movie & dinner. Earlier in the week our friend, Press, called us to invite us to a Mardi Gras party at their place before the parades. So we left early enough to make it there before noon. Showed up with a few minutes to spare, had no trouble finding parking. We walked up to St. Charles and watched the parades roll by. There were 5 krewes in all (Pontchartrain, Pegasus, Shangri-La, Pygmalion & Sparta)...the parade kicked off with a combined band called MAX - featuring players from St. Mary's, St. Aug's & Xavier Prep. They were great...I love watching the bands, especially the local kids - they usually play with a lot of enthusiasm. We managed to catch a lot of beads & other items (Chris caught a baton, which he gave to a little kid after I tried twirling it for awhile). And were surprised that all 5 krewes rolled past us in 1 hour and 10 minutes. Press & Hope had invited some other people, but since they were late - they missed the whole thing (at least from Uptown). We went back to their pad & ate some veggie burgers and talked about the city & Katrina & all that jazz. It was nice seeing them! Took off to go shopping at Whole Foods...spent way too much money (good thing we don't go there very often). Then we headed to Harahan to catch a movie - Match Point. The movie is all about an ex-pro tennis player (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who gets hooked up with a very wealthy British family, ends up marrying the daughter & working for the family business. But he obsesses about an American girl (Scarlett Johansson) who he first meets while she's engaged to his brother-in-law. They end up having an affair, she ends up pregnant and he goes to extreme lengths to keep his new-found comfy life with the wealthy British family. Typical Woody Allen film as far as camera angles, staging & dialog. I really don't think Allen likes women all that much...they always come off controlling bitches who deserve the bad things that happen to them. This movie was less than great...not horrible, but certainly not deserving of huge praise either. After the movie we went to Taj Mahal in Metairie. They're back to a menu...for awhile they only had a buffet. The food was excellent as usual! Then we headed across the Causeway and stopped off at Barnes and Noble for coffee & browsing (plus I picked up In Cold Blood, which I've been wanting to read since seeing Capote). We got home and watched some Olympics news - both US & Canada men ice hockey teams were upset. Go Suisse! Actually...the US vs Sweden game is on right now. So I ought to cut this off. Oh yeah...and Chris just got home, which means it's my turn to go to the gym. We're sticking around the house under misguided hope that contractors will show up to finish things off. At least for a little while. The saga continues...

BTW - CNN Presents tonight is about Bay St. Louis. It's playing at various times today, so check it out.

Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhustle - "Chura Liya Hai Tum Ne (You've Stolen My Heart)" - You've Stolen My Heart (Nonesuch Records)

The Check Is in the Mail Pt VI aka Katrina: a Multi-Seasonal Pain in My Ass.

Another day of waiting for contractors. This time the crew chief (who did finally come by the house Friday afternoon just to check out what the work would entail) called me yesterday to say they would be starting at 8am this morning. I had a doctor's appointment...so Chris stayed at home to wait for the workers. I got a call from the contracting company's bossman saying that the workers would be here to tear out the ceiling early afternoon. So it's a matter of waiting...again.

We had a nice weekend. Friday we ended up watching the Avs beat Columbus...go Avs...and eating leftover Thai food from Thai Orchid in Slidell. Then we went to a late showing of The Matador in Biloxi. The movie was really funny and kind of strange, usually a winning combination in my book. Pierce Brosnan did a good job playing an assasin on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Definitely an entertaining film worth checking out just to listen to Brosnan's f**ked up dialog.

Saturday we stayed around the house with the misguided hope that contractors would show up. Then we headed out for an early dinner (McAllister's in Biloxi) and coffee (PJ's - the only coffee shop in the Gulfport/Biloxi region that we knew was open). Stopped off at Jason & Ellen's house to hang out for a little while before heading out for poker. We had a decent sized group of 14 playing that evening. Unforunately the hosts (Dwayne & Christy) were first out. I think that happened to us one night when we had poker here. Sucks 'cause then you have all these people in your house for the next several hours. I was happy for the most part with how I played. There are always exceptions...but hopefully I learn for the next time. I did meet my goal of pulling off at least one good bluff. I think it works well for me because everyone thinks I don't bluff. Actually...Neil said that about Chris' playing too. Sounds like we both need to practice on bluffing. Or maybe we're just so good at it that no-one suspects. Chris pulled a good bluff on me that night and later told me about it. Rat bastard! Just kidding. Anywho...we both went out in the middle of the pack...I lasted a little longer than Chris, but still well out of the money. C'est la vie.

Sunday we ran out to Slidell to get groceries and Starbucks (we really ought to buy stock with as much as we've got invested in their company). Got home in time to watch the Avs lose to Detroit...suck! Then we watched Olympics and cooked dinner. I made Doro Wat (an Ethiopian chicken dish) and spinach, potato & chickpea curry. Chris helped w/ prep-work & dinner turned out really good. I stayed up to watch the Men's Halfpipe Snowboarding competition...Shawn White was awesome as usual & won the gold. Speaking of which...those medals do look ridiculous w/ the hole in the middle, they look like cd's.
medals or cds?

So in case you haven't watched the news this weekend...this story is one of those that are immediately funny, but then you feel bad for thinking so. I mean the VP Cheney's poor hunting buddy is still in the hospital. But I must admit I am looking forward to the coverage on the Daily Show.

Today's song is for Valentine's Day tomorrow. Chris & I don't really celebrate the holiday...but I thought it was fitting. Kronos Quartet teamed up with Asha Bhustle to record several songs from Bollywood films. It's a nice collection and made several critic's "best of" list from last year.

Friday, 10 Feb 06

It's been a week of waiting around for contractors to show up and here I am still waiting. Chris took Monday off to wait and yesterday. I took off Tuesday - mainly for Dr's appts. Luckily we found out early enough on Tuesday that the workers would not be showing up, so Chris went to work for most of the day. They were supposed to show up on Wednesday morning...I took the day off and waited until after 10 before calling for a "WTF?" Their car had major engine failure...stay tuned. So I waited a few more hours before calling up for a "WTF" part 2? "We are sending over a different crew. They should call you." A few more hours and I call them back, but this time only got an answering machine. Needless to say...Wednesday I was a little bit in a bad mood. Too bad I can't charge them for my time! Thursday Chris took the day off to wait...he finally got ahold of someone late morning and they told him Friday at 9am. So here I am...it's 8:45. Will they show up? My blood pressure is going to spike big time if they don't.

So to waste some time before 9 and because I'm a sucker for the Academy Awards... I present Kelly's Academy Awards:

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams in Junebug, Catherine Keener in Capote, Frances McDormand in North Country, Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener, Michelle Williams in Brokeback Mountain.
My selection from the list is Catherine Keener - but given that I've only seen 2 of the 5 performances - who am I to judge?
Overlooked: Sandra Bullock & Nona Gaye in Crash, Anne Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain, Rachel McAdams in The Family Stone and Katie Holmes in Batman Begins.

Best Supporting Actor: George Clooney in Syriana, Matt Dillon in Crash, Paul Giamatti in Cinderella Man, Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain and William Hurt in A History of Violence.
My selection: (And again I missed 2 of the performances - Giamatti's and Hurt's) George Clooney. He was awesome in that movie! I love my boy Jake...but he doesn't hold a candle yet to the other names in that list.
Overlooked: Clifton Collins Jr. in Capote...he played Perry Smith, one of the murderers...an excellent portrayal in my book.

Shout Out Awards: In some of the other Oscar categories I give a "shout out" to Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room for Best Documentary (check it out now and then get really pissed off along with me if Skilling and Lay - currently in court - walk), Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit for Best Animated Film, Best Cinematography for Brokeback Mountain - it's gorgeous and makes me homesick for the West, Best Writing Original Screenplay - overlooked was Miranda July for Me and You and Everyone We Know, Best Director should go to Ang Lee for Brokeback Mountain...the man has made a bunch of gorgeous movies...besides Steven Spielberg already has too many Oscar nods.

And now for the big 3 categories:

Best Actress: Judie Dench in Mrs. Henderson Presents, Felicity Huffman in Transamerica, Keira Knightley in Pride & Prejudice, Charlize Theron in North Country, Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line.
My pick: I think Felicity Huffman will walk away with this one. I haven't seen the movie...but she sure is great on Desperate Housewives. I've only seen 2 of these performances...Reese was very good as June Carter, but I just don't think it's her year.
Overlooked: Naomi Watts in King Kong...she was great in that movie!

Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, Terrence Howard in Hustle & Flow, Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, David Strathairn in Good Night, and Good Luck.
My pick: Philip Seymour Hoffman definitely! I've seen 4 of 5 performances (not Hustle & Flow)...and all were really good. Second place would go to David Strathairn.
Overlooked: Eric Bana in Munich. Not only is he eye candy, but the man can act!

Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck, and Munich
My Pick: We've actually seen all of these films. I think Brokeback Mountain will get it...but if it were up to me, I'd choose Capote. It's a tough call because these were all great films.
Overlooked: Me and You and Everyone We Know. I know this film had no hope in hell at the Oscars...but I really liked it.

So there you have it. Now only a few more weeks to wait until John Stewart hosts the Academy Awards and I annoy Chris afterwards by watching Joan & Melissa Rivers pick a part the celebrity stylings.

9:30 and all is not well...no contractors. Go figure.

A new week after a busy weekend. We started Friday with plans to go see 'Capote' in the evening after going to Home Depot to pick out a new ceiling fan/light fixture for the living room and an outside light for the front porch. That wasn't too bad, but when we arrived at Ruby Tuesday for dinner, they were closed for some reason. Strange, considering that it was only 8pm and the manager was out front telling people they were closed, while out the back door no less than three employees were talking and smoking a cigarette. Okay, so we went across the parking lot to Chili's (with everyone else who had Ruby Tuesday on their mind). The wait was going to be 1 hour 20 minutes, so we decided to try carry-out, but that was still 50 minutes. Not enough time to eat and catch the movie. We took a menu and ordered carry-out from the store in Gulfport. It was still going to be too late to try and cram food down our throats and still catch the film, so we took our food home and ended up watching CSI and Battlestar Galactica which we had recorded.

Saturday morning I woke up somewhat early, but ended up leaving a bit later than expected. I was heading over to Gary's to watch anime while Kelly went to New Orleans with Allison and Becca. I arrived a little after 10am at Gary's, but it turned out we had to wait to start any discs because the BellSouth repairman was there working on his DSL line. We ended up finishing two series, 'DNAngel' which had a decent ending that we both enjoyed, and 'Stellvia' which seemed to be too rushed at the end. I think some of the storyline earlier in the series (26 episodes) was drawn out a bit longer than it should have been and that made the ending crammed into too small of a time frame. Overall it was a good series though and the ending was reasonable. We also watched two discs of 'Gantz' (only the final disc left) which has been a brutal, mysterious series with plenty of action. It's a strange, but interesting concept. For readers with DirecTV, the first two episodes are available on the Pay-Per-View version of The Anime Network the whole month of February (along with 'Samurai X') on channel 177. We finished off with some lighter fare in 'DearS'.

Sunday we worked on moving almost everything out of the living room so the contractors could get some work done the next day. Kelly also made a birthday cake to take to Becca at work on Monday and 'special recipe' (no, not marijuana) brownies for us while I caught up on some of my Tivo'd anime shows from the past week. Of course it was Superbowl Sunday, so we were going to watch some of the game, but mostly to see this year's commercials. Jason and Ellen came over and we grilled Boca Burgers and potatoes for them and they joined us in watching the commercials, but we all had more fun playing spades. Overall it was a pretty boring game and a disappointment that the Seahawks lost, although there were some bad calls by the refs both ways. The commercials weren't even that spectacular, although there were a few funny ones. Jason and Ellen finished helping us move the tv/entertainment unit and couch out of the living room and headed home.

This morning we woke up early so we could cover the dressers and our bed with plastic dropcloths and move the nightstands and tv into the closet before Kelly went to work. I waited around until 8.30am before calling the contractor's cell phone and the office number. I was only able to leave messages on both. After I showered and biked to the coffee shop it was another hour or so before I received a call from the contractor saying that they were running a day behind because of finishing up some jobs before the Superbowl...blah, blah, blah. He said they would call us later this evening and let us know when they would be here tomorrow morning. Okay, so half my day was wasted and I didn't get out clothes for work, so I 'played hooky' in a sense. I took some clothes up to the dry cleaners at the front of Diamondhead, then came back home and cleaned our bathroom. The rest of the afternoon I spent reading manga, playing poker on the internet, and taking a brief nap on our couch (currently in the kitchen). When Kelly came home we rested for a bit, then headed out to Mellow Mushroom to get pizza for dinner (carry out), took Peter the mountain bike (Schwinn, baby) I acquired from Gary, and went to the 7.25pm showing of 'Capote'. We thought we were going to be the only ones there at first, but six other people showed up for a total of eight. What a fantastic film. Philip Seymour Hoffman totally gets both of our votes for Best Actor. Truman Capote seemed so manipulative of his subject, that he seemed to believe what he told them, truth or not. Of course, the criminal he became so close to was playing Capote as well. It was a very intense and memorable film. Kelly said it was her choice for Best Movie of the year (well, 2005). Definitely one we highly recommend seeing, and we've completed viewing all the nominees for Best Picture. We arrived home and found no message from the contractor, so I'm suspicious that he may not show up again tomorrow, but I guess we'll find out in the morning. Another reality in the continued challenges here on the Gulf Coast. Once you find a contractor, will they actually show up to do the work? Stay tuned.

In lieu of actually writing something witty or meaningful, and because I've had a headache for most of the day...Here are some more Hurricane Katrina pictures that we've gotten from friends:

Beach House 1                             Beach House 2
Before and after shots of some of the beatufiul homes that overlooked the Gulf.

K-Mart north of 90
Believe it or not...this is looking at the K-Mart in Waveland that is north of Hwy 90...a good mile or so north of the beach. Hard to believe there was that much water that far north...you can even see some of the waves, which just added to the damage.

Hotel in Waveland
This is the hotel at the intersection of Hwy 90 and 603...notice the water is just a few feet below the 2nd story.

And because no mention of Katrina would be complete without a nice article summarizing the government's failed response...
