Cheech & Chong- "Santa and His Old Lady"

Wow...is it actually December tomorrow? That's crazy! I guess it is finally feeling a bit like Christmas is around the corner. We had frost this morning and will probably have more tomorrow. Plus today I got my first X-mas card (thanks Jen), my first X-mas present (Thanks Aunt CJ) and probably the best present of all...roofing material sitting on our lawn. You know what that means...someday very soon we will have a new roof. Yee haw! On Monday we got up and Chris added a couple of extra tarps on the roof, as we were expecting more rain that day. While he did that, I was on the phone calling roofers. I got through to Bubba Jones Roofing from Ocean Springs and they sent someone out for an estimate later that afternoon. The estimate was among the lowest we had gotten so far, plus since they were local I decided to sign the contract. And lo and behold, we have roofing material 2 days later. Hopefully they will be equally as prompt coming over and putting it on. We also have a contractor coming over tomorrow afternoon to give us an estimate on the inside work that needs to be done: drywall, insulation, painting, etc... Hopefully that estimate will come in close to what insurance is giving us. So yes...things are looking up.

So in honor of the holiday season...I've added Cheech & Chong's Christmas classic. My dad used to add this track to all his holiday mix tapes. My dad was a big Cheech and Chong fan...he used to take me to all their movies when I was a kid. Nice Dreams was my fave at the time...I think I liked the whole ice cream truck selling drugs idea. Now it's time to bust out the Santa hats for our skulls, add some festive lights, maybe I'll even pick up some pointsettias (since I've been hearing Norman Winter - on Southern Gardening - talking about how they grown 'em in Mississippi).

OK...on a more political note. Are there any good cartoonists out there? I was talking to my friend about how lopsided national news is when covering Hurricane Katrina. It seems like New Orleans always gets the attention. I liken it to an annoying baby bird constantly peeping at its mother for a big fat worm. I picture Gov. Blanco as the baby bird and a bloated federal govt. mama bird. It's ok...I know they need help too, but just don't forget Mississippi. I drove around with my friend Allison (whose house in Waveland will have to be bulldozed and she's without flood insurance and facing the prospect of paying 30 years of mortgage on a house that no longer exists) on Sunday...we drove down to Pearlington and then back through Lakeshore, Clermont Harbor and Waveland. We drove past her house and she tried to describe what it was like down there just a couple of days after the storm. Then we drove over toward my friend Todd's house, 'cause I wanted to see it in person - it basically looked like a giant squashed it. It was hard to navigate around that area and seemed like aside from the initial road-clearing, no work has been done on debris removal down there. Anyway...my point is, don't forget about the state that I call home.  On that note, adieu to you and you and you...

Johnny Cash- "Folsom Prison Blues (live)" - Live at Folsom Prison (Columbia)

This has been a pretty busy Thanksgiving weekend. Four days off from work for both of us was nice, and we kept relatively busy. We enjoyed the meal and time with friends on Thursday. Unfortunately, Kelly's stomach was upset later that evening after we came home and she had some leftovers. We ended up not going to the movie that night and hung out at home playing poker against each other while watching 'A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving' and 'Finding Nemo'. I kept the Thanksgiving skulls out for another day before removing their headgear to avoid it getting wet in the rain, and Kelly took this photo as our decorating for the holidays.

thanksgiving

Friday we didn't really do too much except start watching some of the programs we had Tivo'd including the Full Tilt Poker.net Invitational Tournament which had broadcast all four hours the previous night. The insurance company also returned my call from Wednesday to say that after I spoke to someone around noon on Wed., the adjuster actually turned the claim back into the supervisor and that a check was going to be cut to us which we should receive by Monday. I was glad (and actually a bit surprised) he called back. After a bit Kelly got dressed and headed to Gulfport to get her haircut, braving some of the shopping traffic. I stayed home and watched a few of my anime programs and read a bit. I also watched a bit of the football and hockey games on, but got disgusted with the Colorado/Nebraska football game and left it on hockey. Kelly came home and we watched the Avalanche game. They had their first shutout win of the season in Columbus with a 5-0 win. Kelly left during the second period to go to a co-worker's house where they were having a party to celebrate one of our friend's batch of home-brewed beer being ready to drink. I rode my bike over after the game and we stayed there for awhile snacking and chatting. We drove home together and watched some more poker before falling asleep on the couch and heading for bed.

Saturday morning I had intended to go biking in Ocean Springs, but set my alarm to 'snooze' instead of 'on', but it's just as well since it had started to rain. We watched some more of the poker then our friend Neal called to see what we were up to. We told him we were going to see 'Walk the Line', the semi-biography of Johnny Cash meeting June Carter and the early years of his life. We asked him along and met him at the theatre for the 1.50pm showing. It was a really good film. Basically a love story, but not really a 'chick flick'. It had some great music of that era and the Sun Records label tours, with excellent performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. When they showed him at Folsom Prison playing it made me want to go listen to that record after we left the theatre. The three of us then went to eat a late lunch/early dinner at O'Charley's. We headed home and found a letter from USAA explaining what they were going to pay. It was kind of what I had been dreading all along after talking with friends and others who all over seem to have been screwed over by the insurance companies. The amount listed was a lot less than the average price for a re-roof job, but possibly enough. My greater concern was the amount listed for the interior work (replacing the ceilings in the living room, garage, and our bedroom). We haven't had any luck so far in finding a contractor to come out and give us and estimate for that yet, but the figures seemed a bit low. I didn't put too much thought into it at the time though because our friend Peter had left a message on the answering machine saying that they were getting up a last-minute game of poker. We put our folding chairs and chips in the car and drove back out to Gulfport. There ended up being 9 of us total. I played aggressive in the beginning, but then had some crap cards towards the end when the blinds got higher and ended up in fourth (just out of the money). Kelly came in sixth place. It was a pretty quick game, despite starting a little after 9pm the game was over by midnight. We had shortened the rounds from 30 to 20 minutes which sped up the pace of the game. It had been raining steadily throughout the day and came down strong during the evening while we were playing poker, but had let up by the time we got home. Unfortunately, it was strong enough to blow in some more rain and make the sections in the living room that already had been damaged by the hurricane get even worse. Water was still dripping in through the ceiling fan and onto the coffee table. We were able to move everything off of it and slide it out of the way, as well as move the couch further towards the back of the room. It pissed both of us off because if the pieces of shit at the insurance company hadn't dragged their asses for so long, we could have gotten the roof fixed earlier and wouldn't have the new problem. It's still a wonder that the water didn't make the sheetrock fall through in some spots.

               ceiling               ceiling2

We left a bowl to catch the water underneath the ceiling fan and shut the doors from the kitchen to the living room (so the cats wouldn't come in and drink the water). I also crawled up into the attic and set a bucket underneath the spot where water was leaking into the roof so it wouldn't pool anymore on the sheetrock (see photo on left). We then went to bed pretty irritated.

It had stopped raining and was only partly cloudy when we woke up. The rain wasn't coming through the ceiling fan anymore so I decided that tomorrow (Monday) I would call a couple of roofing contractors and see how soon they could come over to repair our roof. I also called the insurance company's local office in Mobile, but got their voicemail and left a message (which was never returned and it's now 10 hours later). My friend Gary was coming over so we could watch some anime and talk for a bit since I hadn't seen him in awhile. He arrived around 9.30am and we went to get coffee at the Jumping Bean before Kelly left with her friend Allison to check out the damage in the Waveland, Pearlington, and Lakeshore areas along the coast. They were also going to see 'Pride and Predjudice' which looked like a total 'chick flick' to me and I had no interest in seeing (I'm not a fan of period pieces). Allison arrived at 10am and they headed out. Gary and I watched disc two of Genshiken(this is a fan site), as well as a disc each for Stellvia and DNAngel. I also made curry and we discussed hating our jobs and his possible leaving for a job working for TVA in Tennessee under his brother. That would be a disappointment, but both of us are pretty tired of Medicaid right now, especially all the crap he's had to deal with lately as supervisor in Pascagoula. He also gave me the names/numbers for a roofer and general contractor who is doing the work on his mother's home, so maybe we'll be able to get some of our repairs done soon. It was a good afternoon. Kelly came home a little bit after Gary left and I was going to put a tarp up on the roof over the existing one to attempt to reinforce the damaged areas and prevent any more leakage before the repairs are completed and hopefully before any more rain comes. It was getting too dark though and the nails weren't working to hold the board in place I was putting on the edge, so Kelly and I are planning to take off some time tomorrow and get that job done as well as call the contractors and insurance company (again!).

Tonight though it's kick back and watch hockey. The Avs host Vancouver, which will be a tough match-up, especially after it was announced this afternoon that left winger, Steve Konowalchuk (one of the team's best players) will be out for the rest of the season because he has to have surgery to repair torn ligaments on his right wrist. Ouch! Bummer for the team, because he played very well offensively and defensively. He was also one of the assistant captains, and a team leader, so it looks like the rest of the team will have to step up even more now. We still have faith in our team though. Go Avs!

Oh, one more thing I almost forgot. My cousin Claire is spending her junior year of high school in China. She has a blog that she posts her adventures on (about the same frequency as we update our site). I think she is a great writer and has some really entertaining stories to tell, so go check it out.

Time sure flies...hard to believe that tomorrow is Thanksgiving. We're going to our friends' (Cathy & Jeff) house for a big meal. Tonight Chris is going to make some rolls, so we can pop them in the oven tomorrow. I have roasted garlic & cheddar mashed potatoes & green bean casserole to make tomorrow. I think the hardest part for me will be peeling potatoes. C'est la vie. It'll be nice celebrating the holiday with friends. We were going to cook up a small meal at home, but perhaps we will save that for Christmas instead.

We had a busy weekend as usual. Friday night we went to Lauren & Pete's house for an early X-mas party (Lauren is going out to sea and will miss a lot of the holiday season). It was fun standing out back warming up by the firepit (burn ban, what burn ban?...it was a fake fire, yeah that's it) and watching the Beau Rivage crowd get drunk. We didn't stay too late...we had to get back and watch the rest of the Avs game (I know...we're pretty sad). Saturday we lounged around the house for awhile and then headed to Gulfport to check out the new Harry Potter film. I really enjoyed this one and couldn't even tell that it was well over 2 hours long. Then we grabbed some grub from McAllister's and went back home to watch more hockey. Sunday...to continue with the hockey theme, we drove to Pensacola for an Ice Pilots game. First we stopped off and shopped in Malbis, AL...got some coffee at Barnes & Noble and new shoes at Dillards. Then headed to the game. First stop was to see the Stanley Cup, which is touring ECHL towns to raise money for Katrina victims.
the cup & us
So I guess we've jinxed ourselves from ever winning one. Kinda like Jarome Iginla, right?  Yeah...like either of us can even really ice skate. After the game (which Pensacola won) we headed back to MS...stopping off again in Malbis for dinner. So it was a lot of driving just to get a picture with the Cup. We definitely put the "fan" in fanatic.

Monday I ran some errands...came home for a bit in hopes that Tura would make an appearance so I could take her to the vet. No such luck...the monster probably knew something was up. Oh well...she'll have to get her nose drops one of these days. I met Ellen & Lyndsay for lunch at TGI Friday's. We had a nice time eating and chatting. Then I headed down to the allergist and got my new vials of shot stuff. After that I drove back through the Pass to take some pictures:
dentist office                          Pass-railroad tracks
This was our dentist's office. If anyone knows what became of Dr. Drake, please e-mail us. The next shot is at Henderson and the tracks.
There are also some positive signs from down there:
Pass harbor                          old house in Pass
Ok...the harbor is f***ed up, but there are still some shrimp boats afloat. And some houses along Scenic Dr. are still standing.
oak tree - Pass
Plus  many of the majestic oaks are bruised, but still standing. Yup...it may take awhile, but the Coast will come back.

Time to cut this short...gots to watch the Avs game. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Sunday, 13 Nov 05

After our losses on Friday night (but being the hosts with the most), our Saturday was more fruitful. We slept in some then got up and drove over to Covington, Louisiana. It's located just north of New Orleans across the Causeway. Kind of a quaint, artsy, yuppie/business person town. There are a few shopping areas as well as a cute downtown area that reminds me of Bay St. Louis (prior to the storm) or Ocean Springs, but a bit larger. The first stop was to the Bike Zone bicycle shop to have my rear tire and tube replaced on my 'road' bike. I was riding around Diamondhead on Wednesday evening and heard this odd clicking noise after reaching the golf course. I slowed down to a stop and heard this 'pshhhhhh' noise and felt my tire rapidly deflating. It seems that I had run over a piece of glass or metal (hard to tell) and caught a flat. Fortunately, I had my cell phone with me and walked about half a mile to one of the pool areas and had Kelly come pick me up. I usually take my bike to Slidell where they had a location, but the guys who ran the shop in Slidell had flooding in their homes so one has moved to Texas and the other to California. The guy at the shop in Covington said that with no-one in Slidell to run the shop it won't be re-opening. Too bad. I guess I'll have to go a bit further now to have any bike work done. The guy was nice though and had my tire replaced in about ten minutes.

They were having a arts and crafts festival downtown, similar to the one we went to in Ocean Springs last weekend. This one had more artists from many different places, plus some produce and home baked goods from locals. It was really nice and although we didn't purchase much (we would have liked to), we took business cards of many artists whose work we really enjoyed. Our favorite was a photographer from California who had some amazing scenic photography from China. If we had an extra thousand dollars we would have easily spent it on one of his framed pieces. We did end up purchasing some nice coasters that had different New Orleans landmarks logos put on their faces. Very functional since the coasters we have are on their last leg of usefulness. After spending a couple of hours wandering the street full of canopy tents and crowds of people we went with our friend Allison to the Barnes and Noble. She got coffee while we browsed for a bit, then we took her back to her vehicle in the bike shop parking lot so she could head home and we drove across the lake to New Orleans.

The main reason for heading to New Orleans is because on Thur. evening I applied online for a position with the Transportation Security Administration at the airport in Gulfport and had to select one of the few remaining slots to take a computerized test on Friday or Saturday. I opted for the last session at 6.30pm Sat. evening. It was to last up to 3 hours, so Kelly was going to drop me off, go to a movie, and come back to get me around 10pm. Before the test though, we had to eat. We went to the Sake Cafe in Metairie at 3pm for a late lunch/early dinner, but they were closed until 4.30pm. We then drove to Whole Foods (across from a packed Lakeside Mall) which had been damaged during the storm and was under reconstruction, but had managed to open a 10,000 square foot area to the public offering a scaled down selection. We picked up some of our favorite frozen items we can't find at the local grocers as well as a few other semi-indulgent items. We were just happy that they were partially open and look forward to their full return. After shopping we went back to the Sake Cafe and waited for about 15 minutes for them to open. We had a great meal of sushi (which we had been craving), seaweed salad, and miso soup. We ordered the specialty 'Volcano Roll' and another roll that I forget the name, along with a spicy tuna roll, beancurd roll, and one other with tempura shrimp. Yum. We even had leftover sushi which we placed in the cooler we had brought along.

After dinner we headed towards downtown. Traffic wasn't too bad, although there were some places still without power and it was kind of weird until we arrived on Canal Street. Kelly dropped me off and I waited for a bit before the exam began. It wasn't too difficult, and I was finished at 8.30pm. One of the last ones to finish surprisingly. I had time to kill so I walked up towards Canal Place then down into the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. I thought about going to one of the strip clubs, but didn't have much cash and those places aren't much fun alone. I went to the Cigar Factory and chatted with our friend Alex who works there. It was entertaining to watch the clientele that came in to buy cigars. It was nice to see Alex, plus a good way to kill time. We drove home without incident listening to the Avalanche attempt to come back from a 4-0 deficit after the first period. We listened to the whole second period in the car with our Sirius radio and they came back to make it 4-3. We watched the third period at home, and sadly they ended up not really doing much more and lost 5-3 to Calgary. I did find out (quite quickly I should add) via email that I had passed the phase I exam portion and that I had to schedule myself for phase II and meet at the Biloxi testing location this coming Tues. afternoon. I do have a long resume-type form to complete and bring with me, so I'll get that finished up by Monday night.

This morning I got up early and drove to Biloxi to meet with a group of other bikers who received the okay to ride our bikes along highway 90 (what's left of it) from DeBuys Road (the Gulfport/Biloxi line) to Highway 49 and back. We could take all the pictures we want and would be able to see some of the destruction that only first responders, contractors, and residents see at this point. The organizer of the ride is a fellow rider and member of the Gulfport Police Department, who was able to get permission from the supervisors. We started at 9am and rode about 15 miles in less than two hours. It was quite shocking to see some of the buildings that were either gone completely or extremely damaged, and the worst of it we didn't get to see because it lies to the west of Gulfport in Pass Christian and Long Beach. I did get quite a few photos, but they don't do justice to seeing it in person. It also shows how Mississippi is going to take a very long time to rebuild and why cities all along the coast are having problems right now (no tax income from people who don't have places to live). A lot of media say the coast is rebuilding, but I think that must have a lot to do with different individual perspective. It's been two months since the storm and there are still mountains of debris that cities can't afford to have removed. FEMA is dropping the ball on housing residents, and the major media just focuses attention on New Orleans. Here's a link to one of the independent local news outlets, which may seem 'doom and gloom', but it gives a fairly 'real' perspective on everything and I like to check it out every few days to see what's going on along the coast. It was also a useful tool when we evacuated in getting news and finding people we hadn't been able to contact. Here also are some of the photos I took this morning on the ride:

The first photo shows the slab where one of our favorite barbecue places used to be right on the beach. I'd go there with 'the guys' for lunch sometimes. Good food. The 'We Can Do It Y'all' is one of my favorites. We couldn't get any closer, but it really stood out. The church steeple shows how even a large place of worship did not go unscathed and succumbed to the forces of nature. The two photos below show some of the damage to the Grand Casino in Gulfport. The entertainment center right next to highway 90 is gutted. Next to the demolition notice (which was posted all along Second Street, one street north of highway 90 with many older homes) showing areas that will be completely bulldozed it's good to see some people have a sense of humor still (Beam Me Up). The razor wire is in front of the V.A. Home showing some of the damaged buildings where Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel was broadcasting from during the storm and said, 'We should be fine on the second floor where we had to evacuate to...'  I don't remember all of what he said, but remember seeing it when we were in Atlanta, and I guess that Mr. Hurricane Magnet wasn't fine on the second floor after all. I talked to the gentleman on his porch for a few minutes. He had gotten his FEMA trailer two weeks prior (it's just to his right in the driveway) and was just chillin'. He evacuated to Nebraska during the storm and missed the Cornhusker football games but caught the score last night watching tv at the VA center (the area towards the rear that wasn't destroyed). There were so many other things I could have taken pictures of, but it just got redundant after awhile. The damage, needless to say, is just unbelievable.

After I got home I finished the sushi from last night then worked on my resume for the TSA job. After an hour I got into the shower so we could head out to get groceries and go to the movie. We saw 'Jarhead', which was pretty decent. It's a war film, but had a bit of humor along with the drama. Jake Gyllenhall was really good. After coming home it was back to work on the resume and that was most of the rest of the evening. Now I'm getting ready to head to bed since we're finally back at our office tomorrow and it's an early morning to get back into routine by going to the gym with Kelly before we head off for work.

Belle and Sebastian- "She's Losing It" - Tigermilk (Matador Records)

Yeah...It's Friday and I didn't have to work. I did sleep in a little...at least until Josie started pouncing me. So I got up a little before 8 and started working on food fixins. We were having the poker gang over for food and perhaps cards. So Chris and I spent most of the day cleaning and making food. Some people showed up at  4pm...we sat around and talked and munched. Then we grilled some burgers and chatted some more. It was a lot of fun. Then some more people came over after 6...and we busted out the cards. And once again, I was the first one out. I suck! I really went out fast this time. I actually tried to play a few hands and it just didn't work out. I kept hearing Phil Gordon in my ear saying be more aggressive. But that doesn't work so well when someone else has the nuts. Oh well... Chris was second out. The game is still going on. So I'll keep this short and be semi-social. I'll sleep in tomorrow...until attack of the kitty. And then we've got a busy day planned...going to Louisiana - Covington to a bike shop (Chris got a nail in his tire after riding around Dhead, and the Slidell shop that he usually goes to is not re-opening after Katrina...that wench!)...then we'll do some shopping at an arts and crafts festival. Then it's off to New Orleans where Chris is taking a test for a job and I'll be taking pictures and/or seeing what's open in Metairie. Should be fun.

So before I cut this short. I just wanted to add this newsclip about Pat Robertson's comments to Dover, PA. In case you haven't heard, the fine folks in Dover voted out all 8 board members who put the teaching of Intelligent Design (ID) into the local classrooms there. I already leaned towards believing that ID was a farce front of the religious-right trying to inflict their religions beliefs on others. Pat's comments just cement my beliefs. It's because of nutbags like Robertson that I don't prescribe to any particular religion. He just makes it so easy to keep my current religion of one going. For more commentary on Pat Robertson's comments and Intelligent Design, check out this blog.

The song for today speaks of my losing ways in poker...well kinda.

Oh happy days...not only is our phone working again, but so is our DSL. Yup...for the first time since Katrina, we are able to surf the web at home. Which also means that we can post from home, which should also mean more posts. We shall see...

It's been a busy weekend. Friday we went to Mobile to check out a punk show at a comic shop. We got there way to early and hung out, played air hockey and watched the kids play Magic before the show started. I don't know what the first band  was called...but they were pretty lame, in a semi-amusing way. They were like hardcore for 14 year olds with songs about their penises, etc... I also missed the name of the second band, but they were definitely more interesting. Still a bit of a hard sound, just bass and drum playing non-stop for about 15 minutes. It was almost like improvised jazzy, but they definitely knew what the other was about to do. And finally...the band we drove out to see, XBXRX. We hadn't seen them play in many years...since they moved from Mobile to Oakland, CA. Chris & Steve are still heading up the band with a new bass player and drummer. Still the very high energy one would expect from XBXRX. I kept thinking, "How do they find the energy". Oh yeah...they're still really young. I mean, they were still in H.S. when we first saw them, so I guess they've still got the ability to bounce around the stage and into/onto the audience for 20+ minutes at a time. Very good to see them again...we picked up the new cd, but haven't listened to it yet.

xbxrx                     xbxrx

Saturday we slept in...at least as much as Josie would allow us to. Laid around the house for awhile and finally got motivated enough to go to the gym for a little while. Then we came back and packed for our overnighter in Pensacola. We left relatively early...so we could have some time to get coffee and do some shopping just east of Mobile Bay (a new shopping area, perfect for us yuppies).  Then we headed into Pensacola, checked into the hotel and Chris surfed the web for a little while before it was time to go. We had a hockey game at 7pm. It was SeaWolves fan appreciation night. Since the Seawolves' season got canceled due to storm damage at the MS Coast Coliseum (also damaging a lot of their equipment, including the Zambonis)...many of their players are with different teams this season. 2 players were playing for Columbia Sat. eve, Chris Cava and Nick Greenough. So we went, wearing our SeaWolves jerseys...and enjoyed cheering for Columbia along with many other SeaWolves fans. They ended up winning the game with just a few minutes to go in the 3rd...it was a lot of fun. Funny that we heard quite a few Pensacola fans maligning the SeaWolves fans, using foul language in the process of calling our behavior (cheering for the other team?) rude. It was kind of like the pot calling the kettle black. Whatever...we'll be back to cheer on Augusta in a couple of weeks, when the Stanley Cup will be at the Pensacola arena. After the game we went to McGuire's Pub and stuffed ourselves with some good food.

Sunday we drove back to the MS Coast...stopping off at Barnes and Noble along the way for coffee and book browsing. We then drove to Ocean Springs where they were having the Peter Anderson Art Festival. There were quite a few people there and many arts and crafts booths. We met Jason, Ellen, Darren & Amy at Mellow Mushroom for a late lunch. Then we wandered around the festival hoping to find some X-mas presents. Not much luck there...but we did run into several people that we hadn't seen in awhile. We did find some art that we liked & paid too much money for it. But that's ok...we like buying ourselves some art every so often...and it was definitely in line with our tastes. The rest of the evening was spent at home with the kitty-girls...watching tv and chillin'.

I didn't work today...and didn't do much of anything except make some phone calls and run errands. I tried Amy's trick of braving WalMart by putting on the headphones to the ol' Ipod. It worked like a charm...the throngs of shoppers were much less annoying and the screaming brats faded into the background. I got our shopping done...and headed home. Made dinner (Italian meatloaf & pasta) and chilled out. It's about time for me to head to bed, so I shall cut this short.
